Ministry of Defence's "AL Defaa" champion of the Sheikh Zayed Festival Traditional Rowing Race

UAE, AbuDhabi 17 December 2023: In an impressive demonstration of nautical skills, the Ministry of Defence's boat, named "Defaa” led by Nokhatha Badr Abdul Hakim Mohammed Thani, emerged victorious at the Sheikh Zayed Festival Traditional Rowing race. The event, hosted by the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club and held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Club's Board of Directors, showcased thrilling competition among more than 800 rowers.

 

The race, split into two phases, began in the morning with 40 boats in three groups starting from Lulu Island and ending at the Abu Dhabi Corniche. After qualifying rounds, the top contenders from each group entered a fierce finale. Fifteen boats raced from Lulu Island to the grand finish line, intensifying the competition.

 

"Defaa," guided by the experienced Nokhatha Badr Abdul Hakim Mohammed Thani, seized the top spot, displaying exceptional skill and strategy. In a closely contested battle, "Zelzal 1," owned by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi and led by Al Nokhatha Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Al Shehhi, claimed a commendable second place. Following closely behind was "Zelzal," also owned by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi and steered by Al Nokhatha Nawaf Ahmed Mohammed Al Shehhi, securing the third spot on the podium.

 

The victorious participants were crowned winners by esteemed guests, Arif Al Awani, the Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Saeed Khalifa Al Muhairi, Director of the Qualitative Sports Department at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and Khalifa Al Rumaithi, Head of the Heritage Racing Department at the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club.
