"Al-Bawanish" Opens Heritage Races at Al Dhafra Marine Festival

Al Dhafra, February 13, 2025 – Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, the 16th edition of the Al Dhafra Marine Festival is set to take place, organized by Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority and Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club.

Traditional Sailing Races Begin with Salaha Al-Bawanish Race

The heritage and traditional race program will officially begin on Friday, February 14, with the Salaha Al-Bawanish Sailing Race, marking the start of the festival’s competitions along Al Mugheirah Beach in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi.

The race schedule includes:

  • Jananah 22-ft Dhow Sailing Race – Saturday
  • Al Tafrees Traditional Sailing Race – Saturday
  • Marwah 43-ft Dhow Sailing Race – Sunday

High-Profile Participation and Strong Competition

The heritage sailing races are expected to attract top nokhathas (skippers) and sailors, who are eager to compete in these prestigious and widely followed races in Al Dhafra.

Over the past 15 editions, the festival’s races have witnessed large-scale participation and intense competition, drawing both traditional sailing enthusiasts and modern racing competitors. The festival continues to preserve and promote the UAE’s rich maritime heritage, making it a must-attend event for both competitors and spectators alike.
