Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the 8th Historic Delma Race Festival begins on Delma Island.

Abu Dhabi, May 7, 2025 : Under the gracious patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Representative of the Ruler in the Al Dhafra Region, the 8th edition of the historic Delma Race Festival will kick off on Delma Island from May 16 to June 1. The event is organized by the Abu Dhabi Department of Heritage, Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, and Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
The festival features 49 competitions and over 1,000 prizes valued at more than 33 million AED, with the highlight being the 60-foot traditional sailing dhow race—the longest of its kind in the country—covering 68 nautical miles (125 km) with a prize pool of 30 million AED.
Other activities include rowing races, cycling, running, and carrom and domino tournaments, along with heritage, recreational, and educational activities.
Dr. Ahmed Al Qubaisi, Assistant Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, affirmed that the generous patronage reflects the leadership’s keen interest in enhancing national identity and reviving cultural heritage. Majid Al Muhairi, Vice Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, said the festival symbolizes the preservation of maritime heritage and the UAE’s pride in its seafaring roots, with more than 110 traditional dhows expected to participate.
Obaid Al Mazrouei, Acting Executive Director of Festivals and Events at the Abu Dhabi Department of Heritage, explained that the events will be held over weekends from 4 PM to 10 PM, featuring a traditional market, children’s areas, theatrical performances, and daily competitions highlighting the authenticity of Emirati heritage.
